My Pledge To Businesses

If re-elected, I would like to deliver the following:

•    A new multi-agency fraud and economic crime unit, staffed by business experts including specialist forensic investigative skills and leading agencies. Trading Standards, Department for Work and Pensions, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, and the Crown Prosecution Service have significant responsibilities and roles to fulfill. Fraud in its many forms cost UK plc around £200 billion a year - an enormous cost to us all. Fraud was highlighted by HMICFRS’s report “Time to Choose”. This report exposed deficiencies across 11 Constabularies UK-wide (Suffolk Police was not inspected).  We will actively work with Suffolk SME/SMB business leaders, and conduct regular performance review meetings.

•    Fly-tipping and organised crime is the scourge of  Suffolk. Active and rigourous prosecution of these crimes is crucial to our local economy. This will be another multi-agency initiative involving local authorities, The Environment Agency and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Initiating a “zero-tolerance” prosecution approach to this criminality is essential. Time to tidy up Suffolk.

•    Unauthorised traveller sites are unacceptable and can cause major problems for communities and businesses. Suffolk needs at least three temporary traveller sites so these unauthorised sites can be closed quickly. As PCC, I will ensure that Suffolk Constabulary is vigorous in supporting enforcement activity, and help prosecute any associated criminality including fly tipping. Work needs to be speeded up to develop at least three temporary traveller sites.

•    As your PCC, my aim is to set the example in procurement reform amongst Suffolk public sector organisations. The  goal is to spend as much as possible of our own budgets with Suffolk businesses, especially amongst SME/SMB local businesses. We have exceptional skills, services and resources in our county, whether it be in technology, automotive, or green sectors. We are already engaging through The Suffolk Growth Group with local authorities and other public sector bodies to initiate reform, pool our collective budgets, and concurrently reciprocate taxpayer spend within our own county; i.e. with the Suffolk people and businesses who generated the tax revenue in the first place. This will really help support the economic recovery.

•    I will endeavour to maximise capital investment spend with Suffolk businesses.

•    The recently announced Freeport East project is a very welcome initiative potentially creating thousands of new jobs. Discussions will commence in earnest to ensure the policing implications are adequately catered for and help make this opportunity a resounding success for Suffolk.

•    Initiatives to develop port and border security will be developed to increase the deterrent effect to criminal behaviour. This will help tackle the illegal drugs trade, illegal immigration and domestic slavery and human trafficking.

•    The work with NaVCIS (National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service) at Port of Felixstowe is an excellent example of joint working with the private sector to combat the international trade on stolen plant and machinery as well as four wheel drive vehicles. I will explore the options for increasing capacity in this important area.

•    Taking the pressure off our roads policing units by piloting a new two-year shared funding Highways England Traffic Unit patrolling the A12, A11 and A14.

•    The new Commercial Vehicle Unit is producing excellent results and will be expanded depending on demand as necessary.

•    The strength of our roads policing will be maintained at current levels as a minimum. Keeping roads safe and traffic flowing is crucial for our economy.

•    Expansion of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system to help catch criminals and reduce crime will be prioritised.

•    There has been considerable success in dealing with the menace of County Lines and Gang activity. I am totally committed to continuing this successful multi-agency approach for as long as is necessary.

•    The right to protest peacefully and lawfully in the United kingdom is something I completely support. What must not be tolerated is violence or criminal behaviour and where individuals and businesses are impeded from going about their daily business.

•    I would like to see the development of more highly trained specialist units or individuals in the Constabulary. For example:
1.    Retail and town centre management
2.    Tourism
3.    Logisitics and haulage
4.    Energy
5.    Food and agriculture
6.    Construction
7.    Creative and cultural industries

•    Ensure the Constabulary has an ongoing apprenticeship programme for young people, including work placements and work experience including
