Developing The Police Workforce

A well-trained workforce is fundamental to making any large organisation successful and this is particularly the case for Suffolk Police. The learning and development department will be even more crucial as the numbers of officers and staff increase and the pattern of crime and crime prevention changes and becomes more complex.

There must be sufficient capacity and expertise. The “back office” functions all play a pivotal role including communications internally and with the public. Properly targeted investment in these functions will help the front-line officers become more productive and successful in bringing criminals to justice.

I will support:

•    Continuing professional development programmes.

•    A focus on improved mental health of the workforce.

•    Targeted use of career breaks and job exchanges.

•    Reducing the need for short term contracts and the use of agency staff whenever possible.

•    Doing whatever is possible to make sure the workforce reflects the population it serves, with relevant diversity.

•    Ensure the reliance on volunteering including the members of the Special Constabulary has sufficient support within the human resources department to enable expansion.

•    Financing updated training programmes for specific crimes such as domestic abuse, rural crime, sexual offences and hate crime.
